The Flaming Lips: A Quick Biography

Coyne crowd surfs in his bubble
The Flaming Lips are a psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma City. Formed in 1983, the band's current lineup includes core members Wayne Coyne, Steven Drozd, and Michael Ivins as well as Kliph Scurlock and Derek Brown. Signed to Warner Bro. Records in 1992, the band has released more than 14 LP records in addition to numerous EP's, a feature-length movie, and more. The group has won 3 Grammy awards to date, garnering attention from both fans and critics alike. They are well known for their over the top live shows and the oddball behavior (on and off stage) of front man, Coyne. Their live shows often include costumes, puppets, elaborate light shows, visual projections, lasers, giant hands, lots of confetti and the signature plastic bubble in which Coyne rolls over the adoring crowd. But their music is just as interesting and engaging as their shows. Constantly tweaking and playing around in the studio, “the Lips” (as they are often-referred) have proven to be more than just a gimmick. As I hope this blog will demonstrate, the Flaming Lips have used a combination of electronics, experimentation and eccentricity to create a unique and influential sound.
